Changes/or trends in the Canadian roofing industry 2024

January 24th, 2024 | in General Roof Info

Homeowners and business owners alike continue to look for more durable, more sustainable and more eco-friendly roofing options from Canadian roofing companies heading into 2024. Read on to learn about the newest changes and trends in the roofing services industry.

Roofing services industry trends for 2024

  • Green roofs

  • Cool roofs

  • Solar roofs

  • Recycled roofs

Green roofs provide a number of energy-saving and environmentally friendly benefits. Replacing traditional roofing materials with vegetation, green roofs improve air quality, biodiversity and stormwater runoff management. At the same time, these ‘living roofs’ reduce urban heat island effects and provide great insulation. Buildings stay cooler in the summer and lose less heat in winter. Vancouver has a number of green roofs already, including two of the largest in the world: the Vancouver Convention Centre and the Olympic Village.

Cool roofs are rising in popularity due to rising temperatures and rising energy prices. White or light-coloured coatings and roofing materials reflect sunlight better than dark colours. This simple effect mitigates heat generated by sunlight and saves on energy costs. Cool roof technology continues to advance, bringing more durable coatings and long-lasting roofing materials to the market.

Interest in solar roofing continues to increase into 2024. Homeowners and commercial building owners have more opportunity to access a variety of solar roofing options besides the traditional racking systems seen on roofs today. Solar shingles generate electricity from the sun but look and function like a regular roof. A good sustainable option for those not liking the look of solar panels.

Metal roofs earn high praise for recyclability, however GAF has developed a groundbreaking technology that turns recycled shingles into new roofing materials. Currently, 90% of end-of-life shingles end up in the landfill. They hope to divert a million tons of asphalt shingles from landfills yearly, by 2030. From the article: “GAF found they were able to use about 90% of the shingle waste material they collected and produce new asphalt shingles containing approximately 7% recycled content”. The ability to recycle shingles is a big jump for sustainability and this new technology will only grow throughout 2024.
