What are green roof systems?

July 12th, 2022 | in Commercial Roofing, Green Roofing

As interest in green roofs continues to grow, questions arise as to what green roof systems are and their benefits–there are many.

We normally talk a lot about Torch-on and BUR roofs but we’re also a green roofing company, so we’d like to answer some of these questions today so you can decide if this is something you want for your building.

A green roof system includes

  • Plants

  • Filter membrane

  • Possibly a drainage system (depending on size and complexity).

  • A root barrier

  • A waterproof, protective barrier

Plants: The type of plants chosen to grow on a green roof include drought-tolerant grasses, ground covers, and succulents like sedum. This type of greenery is able to withstand harsh weather conditions typically found on a rooftop.

Filter membrane: This layer prevents particulate matter from entering the drainage system and clogging it.

Drainage: The drainage system is designed to retain some rainwater for the plants and overflow to be directed to the appropriate drains and off the roof.

The root barrier: This thin membrane sits atop the waterproofing layer and is used to protect it from any damage the roots might do.

Waterproof, protective barrier: This tends to be EPDM rubber because of its excellent waterproofing capabilities.

Benefits of a green roof

  • Regulate internal temperature

  • Sound insulation

  • Better air quality

  • Biodiversity

  • Rainwater runoff control

  • Increased protection of roof

Green roofs come with a number of great benefits. They help regulate the building’s internal temperature, insulating it from summer heat and winter’s cold. They also absorb sound, providing some insulation against noise. Green roofs improve air quality and add natural diversity to the urban landscape. Their superior ability to absorb rainwater means there is less wild run-off which decreases the damage that can cause. And all that greenery helps to protect the underlying roof from temperature extremes, weather conditions and UV rays, increasing its lifespan.

Vancouver has several green roofs dotting the skyline, its most famous being the Vancouver Convention Centre. It has set its sights on “making all new buildings “carbon neutral” by 2030” through the promotion of green roofs.
