What are the most energy efficient roofing systems?
Energy efficient roofing systems are a big draw as commercial building owners search for ways to reduce energy costs through roof installations in Vancouver.
Some take it even further and pursue LEED certification for their new constructions or roof replacements (see several examples right here in Vancouver and BC).
Since your commercial building represents a long-term investment lasting decades, it makes financial sense to move forward with energy efficiency in mind. Today, we look at the most energy efficient roofing systems. Some of our most popular systems make the list.

Single-Ply
PVC and TPO are both light-coloured membranes which reflect heat, thus keeping the building cooler. EPDM is a dark membrane which retains heat. Which one is best for your building will depend on whether your heating system or cooling system is more costly to run. With climate change, white coatings are available for dark roofs should heat dispersal become more important. Commercial roofing contractors in Vancouver can help you determine the best system for your select building.
BUR
Built-up roofs are made up of multiple layers which contribute an insulating property to the roof system. Both heating and cooling costs are reduced due to improved thermal performance. This type of roof can also benefit from light-coloured coatings to further reduce heat radiation.
Mod-bit
Modified Bitumen roofing is another layered system incorporating insulation into the design. These roofs have excellent thermal performance in cold weather conditions. Light coatings will turn this into a ‘cold roof’ to better insulate the building from higher temperatures in the summer as well.
Green
Green roof systems are famous for their energy efficiency. Cooling costs alone can be lowered by more than 75%! VIU’s Cowichan campus earned its LEED certification in part by incorporating a green roof covering over 90% of the campus.
We should also note that single-ply membranes can be recycled (a LEED consideration). As well, it can be easily converted or adapted for green roof installation. We can also consult with you on additional structures or installations on your roof, such as solar panels or greenspace.
