Where are inverted roofs most commonly used?

Inverted roofs are sometimes called upside-down roofs. They are built differently from traditional roofs because the waterproofing layer sits underneath the insulating layer. This method of roofing comes with a lot of advantages like increased protection of the waterproofing layer, improved longevity and imperviousness to freeze/thaw cycles. This makes them useful for a lot of commercial buildings such as universities, government buildings, convention centres, shopping malls and more.

Since the insulating layer is on top, it needs to be secured (ballasted) so it won’t blow off in the wind or float in rainwater. Gravel, stones, tiles or pavers are popular ballasting options. So too are plants in what’s called a green roof.

Green roofs are becoming one of the increasingly popular types of commercial inverted roofing in Vancouver. You might already be familiar with the ones on the Vancouver Public Library building and  Vancouver Convention Centre–it’s the largest single-building green roof in Canada! Green roofs cover a lot of our Olympic Village neighbourhood too.

Inverted roofs can be installed quickly and in some instances, overtop of an existing roof. Professional commercial roofers will need to assess the structural integrity of the building to ensure proper installation. The building must be able to withstand the weight and must be built with the correct pitch to ensure water drains well.

We’ll be seeing more and more inverted roofs in Vancouver as their benefits become more well-known. They offer exceptional durability, better thermal regulation, stormwater management and are more environmentally friendly than other options.
