TPO and EPDM are excellent examples of single-ply flat roofing for Vancouver buildings.

Often called “rubber roofs”, they’re known for their flexibility, durability and excellent waterproofing capabilities. They’re also significantly lighter than other flat roofing options. However, they each have their own characteristics as well, which make them desirable for different purposes. Here are the details.

TPO

  • Energy efficient
  • UV and wind resistant
  • Dissipates heat
  • Quick to install
  • Durable
  • Cost-effective
  • Non-toxic/Recyclable

TPO  stands for thermoplastic polyolefin. It comes in light and dark colours however it’s most widely used with white colouration. This gives the roof reflective qualities which assists with dispersing heat during hot weather. Excellent heat resistance makes this a “cool roof”. Cool roofs offer better energy efficiency and help to lower overall building cooling costs.

In addition to heat, TPO roofs are also resistant to wind, UV rays and fungus.

TPO roof installation is quick and easy and is achieved by hot-air sealing seams. This type of rubber is non-toxic, making it safer to work. It’s also recyclable.

EPDM

  • Affordable
  • Durable
  • Retains heat
  • Lowers heating costs
  • Excellent waterproofing capability

EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. It’s a dark membrane which absorbs and retains heat. If your heating bill is more than your cooling bill, an EPDM roof can help bring down that cost. That said, there are light-coloured coatings available to make them reflective instead.

Commercial roofing services in Vancouver install an EPDM roof using ballast, tape or mechanical fasteners. These roofs have excellent waterproofing capabilities and a proven track record. They are a tad more durable than TPO. Like TPO, EPDM roofs are recyclable, thus a sustainable choice.

Both of these rubber membrane roofing systems are vulnerable to punctures, tears and abrasions. Foot traffic on the roof is the most common cause of this kind of damage. Read more about that and how to mitigate it here.
