Reasons to upgrade a tar and gravel roof to 1-ply membrane

Tar and gravel roofs, aka BUR (Build Up Roof) have been a ubiquitous sight along the Vancouver skyline. As one of the most economical roofing options, they come with a long life expectancy, good insulating properties and great protection from UV rays. However, their day in the sun is coming to an end, because better options are available. For those contemplating their choices in commercial roof upgrades, single-ply roofing is an excellent option.

How is 1-ply membrane roofing better than tar and gravel? All that tar and gravel is heavy. A roof needs to be structurally able to withstand the weight and sometimes needs upgrades to do so. It’s also messy, hazardous and environmentally unfriendly. In contrast, single-ply membrane roof construction uses lightweight and flexible sheets of rubber. It’s fast and safe. Plus, all of the materials can be recycled. 

1- ply membranes come in a few different types depending on the material they’re made of. TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin), EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride). 

TPO: Hot-air sealed. Comes in light and dark colours, including white (light colours have reflective properties for better heat dissipation in the summer), energy efficient, non-hazardous.

EPDM: sealed using ballast, tapes or mechanically, black colour aids in heat retention, proven track record

PVC: Hot-air sealed, long-lasting, incredibly durable, light colours available for better energy efficiency, great for restaurants as chemicals from cooking oils won’t degrade the membrane.
