The Importance of Proper Commercial Roof Insulation for Vancouver Summer Months

We’ve just experienced our first heat wave of the year here in BC. And it won’t be the last. Excessive summer heat is going to be an ongoing issue due to climate change. For Vancouver commercial building owners, it’s now more important than ever to ensure you have effective roofing insulation.

Maintains more consistent interior temperature

Minimizes thermal shifting = more durability

Proper roofing insulation confers a number of crucial benefits like keeping cooling costs down, stabilizing interior temperatures, minimizing thermal shift and adding fire resistance.

Insulation protects your building from heat and helps to maintain a more constant internal temperature. So your customers, employees and visitors stay more comfortable. It also cuts down on the amount of cooling necessary. Therefore your HVAC will not need to run as hard or long. (Bonus: the same principle also applies to heating during the winter months.) When the lifespan of a roof is measured in decades, that’s a lot of energy savings!

Speaking of lifespan, insulation makes your roof more durable and helps prolong its life. It does this by limiting thermal shift. When roofing materials heat up under the sun, they expand. When they cool down in the evenings, they contract. This plays havoc with roofing seams and fasteners and takes years off your roof’s life. Good insulation reduces thermal shift, saving you money in repairs and replacements.

Finally, roofing insulation adds fire resistance. When you take into consideration the recent wildfires, heat domes, and record-breaking temperatures, the more fire protection you can get, the better.

In summary, this summer is going to be HOT. We wrote briefly about how hot weather affects commercial roofs here. The best defence for your building is proper roofing insulation. There are several options available, which we go over, here.
