Ways the energy efficiency of commercial flat roofs can be improved

Energy-efficient roofing has always been an important way to reduce energy use and save money on heating and cooling commercial buildings. It is especially topical right now as energy costs are rising higher and faster. Here are a few ways to maximize energy efficiency when choosing a flat roof.

One of the most important factors for energy efficiency in roofing. The right insulation helps maintain the balance between warm and cool air to keep bills low and occupants comfortable. Some older roofs have no insulation at all. Investing in a new roof will immediately be a step up in energy efficiency.

Light colours reflect light and heat, helping the building to stay cooler. Dark colours attract heat which aids the building in keeping its heat. Which type will result in the most savings depends on how much energy you spend heating and cooling your building over time. A flat roofing contractor in Vancouver can help you determine which will be best in your circumstances.

PVC and TPO (both single-ply membranes) are examples of light-coloured, UV-resistant, reflective flat roofing materials. EPDM (also a single-ply membrane, aka “rubber roof”) is commonly black and not as reflective as TPO or PVC. EPDM retains heat, thus reducing the energy required to maintain warmth. It is an affordable, durable option

Another option for roofs in good condition is to change its colour with coatings. For instance, if the desire is to reduce the amount of heat absorbed, the roof could be covered with white paint or a specialty reflective coating designed for roofing materials.

Plants are good for energy efficiency, helping to keep the surroundings cool. Planting shade trees around your building is a long-term solution, given how long they take to grow. However, a green roof is perfect for commercial flat roofs. It will have the same effect and can be installed and working much more quickly. There are numerous other benefits of green roofs. A commercial flat roofing company can help you decide if this one is right for you.
